Shout out to Indies - Fraction of Stone by Kelley Lynn

We here at The Paperback Princesses often receive emails from Indie authors requesting reviews and are blessed with free book copies. Often we are unable to get to so many titles before our mass market published books take over our TBR shelves. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of great reads though! We want to give back to those Indie authors and are declaring EVERY SECOND SUNDAY our SHOUT OUT TO INDIES MEME. For those of fellow bloggers, please feel free to add our meme to your regular schedule. We only ask that you quote and link back to us as a courtesy. For all of you Indie authors, we invite you to contact us at the contact link to your top left. We will select 1 - 3 titles (each time we post) that sound interesting. Lastly, for you readers, this is a bit of a test so please do comment and let us know what you think. We will also be offering up giveaway copies whenever we can! So without further ado, here is this week's pick -

Wind tunnels, torrential rains and earthquakes tear apart Casden. The cause of the world’s imbalance is unknown, but the mounting occurrences suggest there’s little time before life ceases to exist.

Rydan Gale and Akara Nazreth are the only humans with the ability to wield magic. The tattoo on their necks and the discovery of an ancient book, dictate they are the key to the world’s survival.

But the greatest obstacle for saving mankind isn’t the bizarre creatures, extreme betrayals and magic-fearing men hunting them.

It’s that Akara doesn’t believe the world is worth saving.

We asked Kelley why she writes YA books and this is what she told us -

Why I Write YA:

First, thank you Paperback Princesses for allowing me a space on your fabulous blog! I am truly honored.

Do you know I’d never thought about this question until the Paperback Princesses asked me? I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Haha. But I have to answer somehow so after a bit of thinking, this is what I’ve come up with.

Anything is possible as a teenager. I truly believe this. At this age we have yet to choose who we want to be, what we want to do. We have responsibilities but are rarely responsible for others. Unless we choose to be. And that’s what’s cool about writing YA. About writing these characters into situations of great adversity. Putting huge weights on the shoulders of ones who are just young enough not to realize the gravity of a situation and the huge lengths they will have to go to accomplish it. And yet this bit of naivety, this exploration we all must go through at this age, gives them the courage to attack anything. They have the drive within them to prove themselves, and won’t stop until they do.

I also like writing YA because it’s about the characters and the action. Sure there’s world building, and descriptive paragraphs. But I like reading YA because it’s quick. Things happen fast and every word is carefully chosen. There are so many books to read and so little time. I want to get into a book, be swept along on the journey, and come out thinking about the book long after I’ve put it down and moved onto the next. YA accomplishes this over and over again for me, and I hope I do this with my work.

Good luck with the book Kelley.

  1. I like your reasons for writing YA, Kelley! and I think there is some reason why I like to read it in there, too! :)

  2. I like your reason - anything is possible! When we are naive and don't quite know what we're getting into, we are able to leap into action without overthinking. It's only later when we look back and say, "I can't believe I did that!" Well done - you're book sounds like a great story.

  4. Ooh, nice summary--I'll have to get this book when it comes out! And Kelley's reasons for writing YA are elegantly stated.

This is a cool thing to do, spotlighting indie authors. You should definitely keep it up. I'll be stopping by often. :)
