Review:

Once again Cassie Clare manages to stun me with her brilliance. It's no secret that I love this series. Its my favourite. Of all time. Seriously. Second place goes to Vampire Academy. But Cassandra Clare really does manage to weave so many elements into her Mortal Instruments series that it is confounding. Not only that but you see glimpses here and there of how this world crosses over into the past with her Infernal Devices series.

It's hard to discuss the how phenomenal this title is if you don't already know the previous 4 books before this. By now the characters are so solid in terms of their thought processes and jokes. I hate to say it but when I see phrases from the book I think - That is SOOO Jace. Or what a Magnus thing to say. It's sad. Book friends...what can you do?

Within the first 100 pages, Cassie talks about a t-shirt that Simon is wearing. It says "Clearly I have made some bad decisions". If you know what Simon is and how he has gotten himself in and out of different scenarios, then you'll understand how ridiculously funny this is. Supposedly you can buy the tee at topatoco.com but I have not been able to find it.

So instead of telling you how much you need to read this series, I'm going to leave you with my favourite quotes so you can see what you're missing.

So I know that I haven't told you much about the book but that's because it is very hard to describe when if you haven't read the rest of the series and I don't want to ruin anything. For those of you who have read book 5, you only have another 1 1/2 YEARS to wait for City of Heavenly Fire, coming out March 2014. Simon and Schuster, shame on you! :P However, there are some Shadowhunter extras that you can explore in the meantime....

Review:

I was lucky enough to read this title from NetGalley. I especially enjoyed the first title in this series - The Goddess Test so I was thrilled to see a copy in the NetGalley catalogue! Ms. Carter combines Greek myths with modern day events for teens to relate to. Throughout Book #2, Kate struggles with her insecurities with Henry and their relationship. She is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld but can she really fill this role properly? Once again she is challenged by the other gods assuming she is not yet ready for this position. Even though she passed the previous tests set before her, she still must prove herself to this family, to herself and to Henry. Plus, she needs to get over her insecurity of Persephone, Henry's first true love, and ask for her help. Interesting twist! Can she do it all in 300 pages?

Because most of this book was based on Kate's insecurity with her position in Henry's life and the responsibilities associated with her title, there were times when I was a bit irritated by Kate's attitude. However, when you are insecure and unsure of where your trainwreck of a life is heading, I guess you really do second-guess EVERYTHING. One thing that this character did well was to stick to her guns and stand by her values. The gods in mythology have done a lot of incestuous things and made some very questionable choices. She establishes her values, sticks to them and lets others know how important they are to her. This was one area where she was very vocal. I had wished for her to be a bit more assertive throughout the story (especially taking control of the role of a goddess).

I did enjoy this read and I think it best to start with The Goddess Test before jumping to this one however be forewarned...Ms. Carter throws a doozie in the last 3 pages of the book. For those of you who have read this title, I'm sure you'll agree that it had me slack-jawed. I was not expecting this ending. No matter how much Kate's initial attitude irked me, I'll be looking for book #3 - The Goddess Inheritance when it comes out next April. If you are into spins on history and greek mythology, you'll enjoy the Goddess Test series!

Gleek Update

I was a late bloomer when it came to jumping on the Glee train. I'm not sure when it started but a few months ago I was watching Glee music performances on YouTube. My daughter is 3 and she loves to sing top 40 songs. I like the Glee versions because usually they are less raunchy than the originals. Now we watch them online regularly and she likes to dance to her favorite tunes (Rumor has it is our fav).

So I have to be honest and say that I've fallen behind on my Glee watching so I pulled a 5 episode marathon to catch up. I'm so sad that its over and I have to admit, it just won't be the same without Season 3's seniors. What do you think?

Before I tell you how absolutely wonderful this book is, I have to point out that if you are not a fan of Greek myths then Dreamless is definitely NOT the book for you. Ms Angelini has delved into the world of Greek mythology so deeply and successfully that it's hard to remember it is just fiction. It's confusing, complex, complicated and completely compelling.

It's been some time since I read and reviewed Starcrossed, the first book in the trilogy, and on hindsight I wish I had re-read it - it took me a while to remember what had happened and I spent the first chapter or so with a bit of a puzzled expression on my face, but once my memory was jogged it was so easy to fall back into the world of the scions and their families. There is a lot of familial love in the story and it emphasizes how important family is for everyone, especially when refering to characters who have missed out on this.

This is a story about a family, or House, who are being manipulated by fate - 'The Fates', to be precise, and of the struggles that ensue while trying to control their own destinies and beat 'The Furies'. Helen and Lucas; Jason and Claire; Ariadne and Matt, - they are just the almost couples in the story. There's also Orion, Hector, Daphne, Cassandra, Zach and too many others really to mention, but all are crucial to the story in their own way. And let's not forget the bad guys who are majorly creepy and revolting. Dreamless has a love triangle that is just not quite what you are expecting and is so heart-breaking. I'm not normally a huge fan of triangles, but this one works, on so many levels.

I love the fantastical elements of the story - the superhuman strength, abilities like flying, bending light, shooting lightning from fingertips, etc - and they way that they all just seem so normal. Couple all of this with mind-bending trips to the Underworld and meetings with Gods and you're in for the read of your lives. Wonderful storytelling, fascinating characters and a brilliant love story - what more could you want? Number three perhaps? Not soon enough for me, that's for sure.

Rambling Thoughts From an Airport Bookstore

I just got back from a trip to England, which was a lot of fun, and as usual I found myself at the airport with time to spare. What better to do than find a bookstore and have a look at what is on the shelves. At Toronto's Pearson Airport that would be nothing! I could not believe how bad the selection was there. I knew that there wouldn't be too much in the YA line, but I was expecting just a little more than The Hunger Games. Thank goodness for well a stocked e-reader, or my flight would have been book free.

While away I was able to visit a Waterstones (2 actually, about 1/2 km apart) in Liverpool and I was astounded when I asked where the YA section was and the clerk looked at me and said 'what's YA?' I kid you not! After some discussion we settled on 'teenage' section and I went upstairs to see what they had - what a disappointment. Of the three sections of shelving that had been designated for teens, I think I had already seen about 90 % of them. I am really thrilled that UK teens are able to read our fantastic North American authors and vice versa, but I must admit I was dismayed that there was so little that was new to me. I guess it really is becoming a small world. I was hoping for some amazing UK authors that I didn't know and could get all excited about. Then, when I asked for a copy of Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry (to send home to Australia, with my brother, for my nephew) it wasn't even in the correct section, but was with the adult books!

The flight home was from Manchester airport (England) and what a difference there was. There is a huge W H Smith's at the airport with a whole section for YA (sorry, teens) but again, I was disappointed. Just the same old, same old. My eyes lit on a title that I hadn't seen before, 172 Hours on the Moon, by Johan Harstad, and I eagerly grabbed it up and went to pay for it. Then when I read a bit further, I realised why I hadn't seen it before - it has been translated from Norwegian.

Actually when I searched after I got home, it is available in Canada, with a different cover which is why I didn't recognise it.

The top cover is our Canadian one and the bottom is the UK cover. Has anyone else seen it, or read it? I've almost finished reading it now, so I'll be putting a review up soon. Anyway, to cut a long story short - no nice new UK books to review. And be warned - when travelling, make sure you take your reading material with you, I'd hate for you to be out of luck the way I was.

PS I actually took the opportunity while I was away to read an adult book - one that I won't be reviewing, but for those of you that are interested it was Event by David Lynn Goleman- courtesy of the sale cart at the library. (Actually it was a pretty good, creepy aliens invading earth, adventure type that I really quite enjoyed.)

I was absolutely thrilled when I saw this ARC available on Netgalley. I have been knitting toe-up socks for some time now, and I have been frustrated at not being able to find a really nice cast-off edging with enough elasticity. My problem is now solved. Leslie Ann Bestor has managed to put together the quintessential guide for casting on and casting/binding off. The instructions are straightforward and clear, the pictures are sharp and easy to see and the layout is simple and easily navigated.

Cast On, Bind Off may not contain every possible method of doing each, but it certainly has enough to satisfy the majority of knitters. Me for certain. My problem is that now I want to go and try each and every method to see what the differences are. So many possibilities, so little time! I highly recommend this wonderful book as a must-have addition to any knitters library - I'm off to pre-order it for myself.

Zoë quickly realizes that she has to master her powers yesterday, because the Pyr are in danger and boot camp is a trap. The Mages want to eliminate all shifters and the Pyr are next in line-unless Zoë and her friends can work together and save their own kind.
Every now and again I pick up a book from the library that is unknown to me. Flying Blind was published almost a year ago, and I don't remember seeing it or hearing about it at all. That's a great pity, because it was really good. It's about shapeshifters. Shape-shifting dragons to be exact. I am a huge fan of dragons, (Anne McCaffrey's Pern anyone?) whether they shift or not, so this was a bonus.

The main protagonist, Zoe, is young and unsure of herself and her powers. She has a vague idea of what she's supposed to be able to do, but she has no clue how to get it to happen. So she's off to boot camp with a parcel of hot young men. Tough, right! Well actually it is, but Zoe handles things really well. I loved the progression of her character and the way she gained in strength and courage. She doubted herself, but found the strength to believe in herself when others told her she could do it.

Garret, Liam, Nick, Adrian and Jared. Five very different young men, but all appealing in their own way. Not all of them dragons though, and not all of them on the good side. Ms Cooke wove a complex and captivating story full of mystery, suspense and surprise that had me turning pages at lightning speed. The story took some unexpectd turns that in equally surprised and delighted me. In fact I just fell in love with her dragons, or Pyr as she calls them. Luckily for me, the library already has the second in the series, Winging It and the third, Blazing the Trail is on order. I can't wait to get them. I love this series and I love this book. Everything that was in the first 3 books, (Wings, Spells and Illusions) was just the lead up to this fantastic finish. OMG it was just so exciting and moving and thrilling and exciting and ... well, you get the picture, don't you.

Ms Pike took the tension in this book to a very high level right at the start, and basically did not let it go until the last page. There is so much going on and it's all so dangerous and completely tragic. I found I was holding my breath in some spots. It's very hard to tell you about this without giving away major spoilers, so I will just say that if you've read the other three you will not be disappointed. If you haven't read the other three, don't read this one until you have. You really need to read all of them to appreciate the bittersweet sacrifices made in Destined.

Laurel, Tamani, David and Chelsea have an amazing adventure that will affect them all greatly on so many levels. It was hard to remember they are all just fictional characters. There is a letter at the end of the book that just about had me bawling, but was the bow that tied up the package neatly. I think I'm going to have to go out and buy this series - I've read them all from the library - but now that it's finished I know I'll read them again. Thank you Ms Pike for giving me such an enjoyable read.

Review:

Interestingly, this is the second book that I've read this month with the name Rafe. Before this, I'd never even heard of the name. The first book was The Calling by Kelley Armstrong. Is Rafe always associated with a dark, brooding stranger?

So I'm a big fan of Ms. Derting. She is one of my favourite authors and doesn't seem to get enough credit for her work. I have enjoyed every single book she has written and has the same level of creepiness as Simon Holt's The Devouring series. Reading the Body Finder series is like a cross between riding a fast moving rollercoaster and walking through the set of a horror movie flick. Kimberly has a knack for making the reader see into the minds of the sadistic villains in her books...which makes me wonder...uh Kim, is there something you aren't telling us? Like maybe an alter ego of sorts?

We see a little triangle develop in this episode of The Body Finder series and I have to say, tsk! tsk! tsk! Violet and Jay are such a perfect couple, how can she (Violet) even doubt their perfection? Sure she has some kind of electric thing going on with Rafe but she has so much history with Jay! And trust. And understanding. Does anyone else feel that Violet and Mia (from The Calling) should see if they can get a double discount for relationship counselling? Girls, the perfect men are right in front of you. Don't fall for the dark and brooding Rafe's in your lives!

Did you know that Kimberly Derting is doing a huge tour and giving away lavender nail polish to her readers? You'll need the phrase that pays to collect your prize. Make sure you say to her - "You can't hide!" in order to collect your prize! (creepy...hey, could another name for lavender be VIOLET???...oh the irony!)

The Last Echo was a thrilling read for young adults. She did have a little language in this title so you might want to keep that in mind if you are referring younger readers. It is a bit scary but in a suspenseful way, not violent or gruesome. Kim did not disappoint in keeping me entertained and wanting more. I think I sped through my title in 2 days. That's quick for someone who doesn't have much time to read, like me. Needless to say, I was tired all week. I tweeted Ms. Derting and there will be more books in The Body Finder series. I'd be happy to lose more sleep reading your books Kim. :D

Review:

First of all, I loved the narrative voice in this novel. Alex Flinn has to be my favourite for fairytale retelling. She is the queen for twisting up a fairytale and mashing it together with something else. I was about 3/4 of the way through the book when it seemed to be wrapping up and then things really took a turn I wasn't expecting. I LOVE it when that happens. Bewitching was highly entertaining and I of course I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good fairytale...even if it starts out a little messed up....

Throughout the story, there were interludes where Kendra would cut out to talk about other aspects of her "witch life" during different time eras. It felt like a mini-commercial. I have read some reviews where reviewers did not like this. I would have been ok with these "glimpses" in or out of the book. They were not necessary but it was interesting. BTW, for those of you who haven't realized it, Kendra was the witch from Beastly....

On a random note, have you ever stopped to think about the things you learn from reading? Did you know that triskaidekaphobia means the fear of the number thirteen? Who would have known. Thanks Kendra, for that bit of random useless information that I will no doubt pass on in the future...like on our blog....

Stream of consciousness: A writing exercise in which you start with a single word, and write down every thought that follows, no censoring allowed. It was one of my favourites in my creative writing class in high school. Shatter Me reminded me of this writing exercise, which is probably why, once I started, I had to force myself to put it down. I absolutely RACED through this book, which I haven't done in months. The narrative is told from 17 year old Juliette's perspective. It is a stylized way of writing that may not resonate with all, but struck a chord with the poet in me. The book opens with a chronicling of Juliette's time in prison - and her reaction to an unexpected cell-mate. We are privy to the initial thoughts she has (emphasized with a strike-through in the text) followed by the thoughts or words she actually shared. Wouldn't it be interesting to have that insight in our daily lives?! On second thought...perhaps it's better left to the books...yikes!

I loved the plot development in this story almost as much as I loved the characters; Juliette, Adam (uh hello, I'm in LOVE!), James and Kenji...even Warner, the antagonist of the story. Mafi's writing style is like prose-perfected, and her descriptions of the simplest things are absolutely mesmerizing (Adam's eyes, raindrops, pain, affection). I can't say too much without giving away the plot. But, I will say that I was unabashedly riveted from start to finish with Mafi's dystopian novel. I am anxiously awaiting the second book, as it predecessor left me with a cliff-hanger ending, and a plot twist in its final pages that was completely unexpected. If you were a fan of X-men or the Hunger Games, it is likely you will be a fan of Shatter Me as well!

So as part of my new plan to remember series, I've been trying to either re-read a series just before the newest title comes out or read it for the first time just prior to the next release. I am finding that the story is so much more enjoyable for me. I don't have trouble remember what had happened in the last book and the momentum doesn't have time to fade.

That was my strategy with The Calling. I just finished the Gathering the week or two before The Calling was released and it was fresh in my mind. The characters feel more tangible and identifiable. One of the things about being a blogger is that you read SO MANY books that sometimes they start to cross-over if left too long between readings.

So back to the book. I find this series so much more exciting than The Darkest Powers trilogy. They are completely different but of course linked by the Edison Group. From the time you open this book, it is non-stop action. Kelley does not disappoint and I had to force myself to put the book down in order to get some sleep. Need a preview? You can actually read the first seven chapters through Browse Inside by HarperCollins. I have to warn you though, once you start, you'll have to run out to purchase the book!!

Its hard to discuss this title without giving much away. If you follow us, you probably know that I don't give many titles a 5/5 star rating on Goodreads but this series scored for me. I found it to be unputdownable. I'm tempted to loan it to my friend's daughter but I'm afraid she won't give it back!!

All the while you will be thinking to yourself - where's Rafe? Is he really dead? They have to bring him back...is he in the next chapter? He can't be dead...

Ms. Armstrong packed a punch with the second book and developed the characters so we start to see more background and history. Personally, I'd like to see Daniel and Maya get together. They seem to go together like peanut butter and chocolate. The whole development of his ability still seems fuzzy. I'd like to see how it comes together better in The Rising.

Are you like me and hooked on Darkness Rising? You can follow Kelley on her blog. She often has extended chapters or different POV chapters as added extras for her readers. Talk about being dedicated to your craft and your audience! I have to say, I really admire Ms. Armstrong. She writes anthologies, a YA series and an adult series. Plus, this woman travels across North America year round to meet her fans. If you haven't met one of our favourite Canadian authors, you really should try to get out and meet her at one of her signings/readings. She's fabuloso. Oh, and a Canadian fabuloso at that.

This Sunday is Mother's Day in North America. In celebration, what are some of your favourite books with mother/child relationships?

This is a tough one because I haven't read many mother/child relationship books recently. However, I think I'm going to have to go with a children's title - I Love you Forever by Robert Munsch. When I was teaching overseas, I had a class of four year olds and English was their second language. The Chinese teacher was reading this book to them so I decided to read them the English version. One of my classes gave me a copy of this book in Chinese to thank me and it was filled with their photos. Beside each photo they had hand-written their names. I have fond memories of my time with these children and now being a mother myself, I like to read this story to my daughter.

Review:

This writing dual did a fantastic job of introducing us to the Wolf Springs Chronicles. I was surprised by how quickly I sped through this title. It kept and held my interest with its fast pace. Tension built for at least the first 1/2 of the story. I did not know much about Unleashed before I started reading so it was a treat to see everything unfold. Sometimes the best books are those you know nothing about. I didn't start reading other reviews until after finishing the book. Sounds like you'll either love it or hate it. Personally, I'm on the 'loved it' team. There were many odd scenarios and characters within the book that kept occurring and I wondered how the authors would bring it all together. It kept things interesting. There is one scene in particular where Katelyn becomes involved with her friend's family. I was a bit shocked at the outcome and I can't wait to see how it plays out in the second title. I have yet to hear what the official name is but will keep my ears open for updates. I don't want to give anything away.

If you enjoyed the Crusade series, don't be fooled. They are not very similar. Give it a try and keep reading if its kept you interested for the first hour of reading.

I sometimes wonder how two authors manage writing a series together. We've seen it with the House of Night series, Beautiful Creatures and this one as well. Must take some serious organization skills!

On one last side note, does this cover remind anyone else of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 2?

If you like paranormal, suspense and something a bit thrilling then this would be a good book for you. I'd recommend it to followers of Kelley Armstrong's Darkness Rising series.
