So there is a wonderful site that might be little known to some of you classic book lovers. It is called Literary Book Gifts. Run by a fellow Canadian in Toronto, I had a chance to ask her a bit about her business.

Melissa launched her site a few months ago to offer book lovers gorgeous t-shirts and totes. Here's a bit of our convo -

Could you tell me more about yourself? My name is Melissa Chan, I have a background in design and I love reading and art history.

Where is your store located? Are you in Canada, the USA? Elsewhere?I am currently located in the beautiful city of Toronto, Ontario. However I work with a couple of great print shops that ship from the USA.

Some of our readers are from outside of North America. Do you ship internationally?
Yes I do ship internationally. For Canada it is about a couple of weeks, while the UK and beyond could be a few weeks to a month.

How did you get started?I got started by just playing around with a few design programs really, then I had to the idea to put some of the designs out there for the world to see.

What inspires you to create something?I am inspired by the stories, characters, and the feeling of each novel. The overall cohesivness in the collection is based largely on my great love and appreciation of art history, mainly impressionism, but am am inspired by many other pieces of artwork from over the years.

Do you use your own artwork?I do all the design work myself, some of the artwork is sourced from very old book covers and I clean it up, remaster it, alter it, and get it ready for printing. Other artwork is sourced out of very old illustrations which requires a similar process, sometimes matching it with typography, choose colors etc. Every design is very different really!

What is your favorite title?
My favorite books are Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, but as for contemporary novels I love the Harry Potter series! I am currently reading Wise Blood by Flannery O' Connor, have you read it? I think it is amazing.
One of the things that I love about the Mortal Instruments series is that it is so vast. And it spans across generations. We see the Infernal Devices series which dates back in time and then current day families, events and relationships. How Cassandra Clare has interwoven the Shadowhunter families is fascinating and I think it is one of the key components to keeping her world diverse and interesting. Each family acts as its own web with its own story and the threads that make up this web are the relationships and complexities that tie to another person or family. Ghosts of the Shadow Market helps to bridge the gap and of course open new story possibilities to understand characters we have seen little of throughout the books. It is a great addition if you have read the full series but would be hard to understand if you are JUST beginning to read about the Shadowhunters. I have been reading them for the past week or so (yes, I need to do reviews) and I LOVE these background stories and histories.

This title doesn't come out until October 23rd but I am SO EXCITED that it is! It is like waiting for the last book in the Harry Potter series...where everything comes together. I am sad to see it end but I am so freaking excited to read what happens as well! So excited in fact that I am tempted to read them from the beginning...can it be done in time? (I've already started re-reading the entire Infernal Devices/Mortal Instruments/Dark Artifices series).

Mary E Pearson is a stellar author. Her last series, the Remmant Chronicles kept me up late at night. Reading that is. And crying and smiling and well, it was awesome. I read that series so quickly that all the books blurred into one and I will need to re-read them to do a review on each individually. Never fear though. Half of them are on audio. :) So back to Dance of Thieves...I am actually late on this one. It was released last week. Get on over to your neighborhood bookstore and buy it. I have a feeling it will be another epic tale.

Review:

I have been on the waiting list for this for AGES. I put it on hold at the library and would forget to pick it up or be waiting in a long line to get it, or they wouldn't have it at the bookstore. It seemed that fate just never wanted me to read it....until one day I managed to get an eBook on my phone....

The first thing I need to say is that Katharine did an excellent job of creating believable, likeable characters. At least for me. I really enjoyed peering into everyone's life and how each was defined by their status and level in society. How different Watt's life was compared to Avery. She also managed to merge different sexual preferences into the mix in a subtle way. I find that more of the current titles seem to involve or mention bi-sexual or transgender relationships. While this is something that has come more to the forefront in society and is nice to recognize, I don't feel that EVERY title needs to be doing this. Some are very blatant about it as well, like it was an afterthought in the editing process and now they have to go back and re-write it into the story line. One of the characters realizes that she likes girls and begins a new relationship with someone outside of their clique. The way Katharine explored this development felt very natural and integrated. OK. Enough of me venting about sexuality in current YA titles. (Sorry for the rant).

I really enjoyed this title and the storyline took a turn that I wasn't expecting and left me LITERALLY hanging at the edge of my seat for the next title. (Which I promptly purchased). That is EXACTLY what I look for in a novel. Entertaining, engaging, suspenseful, thrilling and always keeping one step ahead to surprise you at the end and leave you breathless and wanting more. Well Done Ms. McGee!

I think you'd like it if you enjoyed watching and/or reading the series - Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. This is a nice mix between the two. There is enough drama from Gossip Girl to keep the relationships between characters constantly flowing and enough intrigue, lies, misunderstandings and demise to mirror Pretty Little Liars fans.

Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">

I imagine this book to be something similar to Ready Player One. Marie Lu has always been on my TBR list of authors but for some reason I haven't yet tried her titles. Eager for this one from Audible though! (I know book #2 is just around the corner...just in case it's a winner for me!)

Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she’s innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman’s cast of executioners kill them off one by one?<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">I picked this title for my weekly WOW because a) I love Gretchen McNeil and b) who knows which direction technology and social media is going to drive us in the future. As incredulous as it might seem to be able to stream a live execution, we aren't technically that far away. Is this the direction that our society is heading? Where do we draw the line in "sharing"?
Summary:
After everything that happened - my first boyfriend, my first time, my first breakup - jumping back into the dating game seemed like the least healthy thing I could do. It’s not that I didn’t want to fall in love again, since that’s about the best feeling ever. But as a busy college premed still raw from heartbreak, which is the worst feeling ever, I figured I’d lie low for a while. Of course, as soon as I stopped looking for someone, an impossibly amazing - and devastatingly cute - guy came along, and I learned that having a new boyfriend is the quickest way to recover from losing your old one.

The moment we got together, all my preconceptions about romance and sex were turned upside down. I discovered physical and emotional firsts I never knew existed. I learned to let go of my past by living in the present. It was thrilling. It was hot. Review:
I actually enjoyed this second book more than the first. I felt that just being away from home allowed Dom to straighten up a little bit and step into adulthood. Of course she reverts backwards as her parents announce a big change to the family but she learns from her breakup and begins to trust her instincts when it comes to other people.

I like how she places more emphasis on identifying her own thought processes. Like when she and Guy fight about where their relationship stands yet she realizes that she doesn't really know what she wants in life.

I think that after a big commitment to someone, it is good to play the field a bit and discover things you like and dislike about life and love and everything else in the world. It is a time to be self-critical and try new things and push your comfort zones, challenging yourself to new ideas and concepts Guy is a good experience for Dom and it throws her for a loop to discover that what she thought she wanted, she didn't actually want at all. I think both books to read in combination are a great for someone who is going through a coming of age from teen into adulthood. In her last semester at a private school in Fort Myers, Florida, seventeen-year-old Dom finds her life transformed by her first boyfriend, Wes, a track star at the public school her best friend attends.

Review:

Ms. Snadowsky kindly provided me with copies of both Anatomy of a Boyfriend and Anatomy of a Girlfriend years ago and I recently found them on my bookshelf as I was looking for reading material to take on a vacation. I apologize for not writing a review sooner but it was nice to be able to read them back to back.

So Dom is in her last year of high school and going through the highs and lows of her first love. And of course sex. I won't lie. There was a lot of sexuality and language in this title but it definitely touched upon how foreign everything is when we first learn about sex, our bodies and the opposite sex. Things are not like the movies. We don't strip down naked and feel really sexy and experienced. There is awkwardness. And more awkwardness. And experimentation. Lots of it. Top this off with being a newbie to relationships and there is a lot to deal with. I enjoyed this book for it's raw honesty and naivety in relationships and sex but I did feel like Dom could be over the top at times when it came to Wes. Wes seemed to put less emphasis on their relationship and spread his time and effort more evenly throughout his life Dom began to get a little obsessive. It made me wonder, does everyone go through this? I know I did when I was in university. You start to lose track of who you are and concentrate on the "we" of it all.

I think this would be a good title for a high school student who is new to relationships and sex. I'm not sure I would use it for an ISU but there are definite issues to draw from the book. Relationships between parents and a child/adult, dealing with adult issues, sexual encounters etc.

But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve.

Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated--scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">

I bought this when it was first released and had it read by the end of the week. I know, I know. I didn't blog about it but in my defense, life has been busy. But I am slowly starting to catch up. I like weekends when my dogs decide to wake me up at 6am (apparently they can't tell between weekday and weekend wake up times) and I have at least a couple hours of "me" time before the rest of the household begins.

The first thing I noticed when I bought this book was hey! It's not 500-700 pages long like some of the others! Did I get a bad copy? But as I was reading, I was actually happy to see how the author has been taking the time to get us back to the characters and their histories. It has been so long since A Court of Wings and Ruin that I had forgotten a lot of the last big fight scene.

Life now is tumultuous for Feyre and her ever-expanding extended family. There is a lot of tension between her and her sisters. Things are unspoken between friends. Relationships are tenuous, some stretching to the brink of breaking. BUT Sarah J Maas took this opportunity to begin building up the framework for the next big book to come (Goodreads considers this 3.1 rather than book #4). It wasn't until the Sneak Peek section where I really began to understand Nesta's role in the war to come. And believe me, it's gonna be AMAZING!! If you are a big fan of The Court of Thorns and Roses series, you need to read this title...especially since Book #4 won't be released until 2019.

On a side note, Hulu is doing a TV show based on the Throne of Glass series. Filmrights have also been optioned by Tempo Productions. So if you are as big of a fan of these two series as I am, you should be fist-pumping right now.

One last thing, if you were ever trying to picture the map of Prythian in your head, don't bother. You can view it here.

<span style="color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif;">Ms. Maas has been busy writing two series at a time. And she has DC's Catwoman title to contend with. I guess I can forgive her this once for having such a short series title. Great insight into what is planned in the next book of the series. Worth every penny!

Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations.

But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.

Ten years later, Theo has learned to survive under the relentless abuse of the Kaiser and his court as the ridiculed “Ash Princess.” Pretending to be empty-headed and naive when she's not enduring brutal whippings, she pushes down all other thoughts but one: Keep the Kaiser happy and he will keep you safe.

When the Kaiser forces her to execute her last hope of rescue, Theo can't keep her feelings and memories pushed down any longer. She vows revenge, throwing herself into a plot to seduce and murder the Kaiser's warrior son with the help of a group of magically gifted and volatile rebels. Ah, here we go. Let's take a better look at this series now.

Their romance shaped a nation. The rest was history.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

Ahhh...who doesn't love a good romance during wartime, eh? so I did a bit of scanning and this series was inspired by the Hamilton musical? I have not seen it but there certainly seems to be a lot of buzz about it. Enough to make me interested in learning more. How about you? Fancy a love story?
Summary (by Goodreads)

In the second book of the Carve the Mark duology, globally bestselling Divergent author Veronica Roth reveals how Cyra and Akos fulfill their fates. The Fates Divide is a richly imagined tale of hope and resilience told in four stunning perspectives.

Fate brought them together. The fates, once determined, are inescapable.

Akos is in love with Cyra, in spite of his fate: He will die in service to Cyra’s family. And when Cyra’s father, Lazmet Noavek—a soulless tyrant, thought to be dead—reclaims the Shotet throne, Akos believes his end is closer than ever.

As Lazmet ignites a barbaric war, Cyra and Akos are desperate to stop him at any cost. For Cyra, that could mean taking the life of the man who may—or may not—be her father. For Akos, it could mean giving his own. In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected.
Once there was an author named Veronica Roth who penned a little series called Divergent. And then it became a huge hit and was turned into a movie. Yeah, it's that Veronica Roth. And this is the second book to her second series. Have you read Carve the Mark? Then rev your engines for book #2 which is on the shelves now since it was released yesterday!
But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.

Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play.<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 18px;">So...nearly a year ago I started a subscription to Audible. I now listen to audiobooks quite frequently because I might be able to multitask while I listen and I like to hear different accents and voices for characters. One really cool thing about Audible is that I can also pre-order titles. One of the series that I have been reading over the past few years is the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes. What I had not realized is that my pre-order for this title had been sitting in my account for nearly a month!! So guess what I found a few days ago? It's like finding treasure! Very excited to listen to Book #6. There are a lot of characters so I wonder how well the narration compares to the voices in my head. :) The book voices I mean! (haha!)

I was given a copy of one of the first in this series and I was instantly hooked! I don't know what drew me into the series but I really enjoyed the premise of the novel. Here, take a look.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">Sixteen year old Evangeline"Evie" Greene leads a charmed life--until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, killing everyone she loves, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future--and they're still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can't totally trust Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it's not always clear who is on which side...<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: left;">

Sounds good, right? Well it gets better. Much better. The battle between good and evil becomes somewhat of a game in the world of reincarnation. Think Endgame by James Frey meets Tarot Cards that have come to life. Well, after I finished Poison Princess, I went on to buy the next book and then the next and then the next and so on until I had read all 4 books in about 2 weeks. Now that is a lot for me. Normally I read one title in about 2 weeks during my commute. I didn't get a lot of sleep in those two weeks....

So I can't believe I missed the release of book #5. I'm sorry Kresley. Can you forgive me? I need to buy this title now and make amends...I guess I won't be sleeping much in the next few days as I read....
