A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies

Published: September 2011
Publisher: Harper Teen
Pages: 390

Summary: Goodreads

On the night of Skye's seventeenth birthday, she meets two enigmatic strangers. Complete opposites—like fire and ice—Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair and aloof. Their sudden appearance sends Skye's life into a tailspin. She has no idea what they want, or why they seem to follow her every move—only that their presence coincides with a flurry of strange events. Soon she begins to doubt not just the identity of the two boys, but also the truth about her own past.

In the dead of a bitingly cold Colorado winter, Skye finds herself coming to terms with the impossible secret that threatens to shatter her world. Torn between Asher, who she can’t help falling for, and Devin, who she can’t stay away from, the consequences of Skye’s choice will reach further than the three of them could ever imagine.

I picked up A Beautiful Dark at lunchtime yesterday because I forgot to take my e-reader to work - one of the advantages to working in a library is that there is always something to read!  I hadn't seen it  before or heard anything about it, but the blurb intrigued me.  I was really going in blind when I started it, but if I tell you that I finished it last night before I went to bed, that will give you some indication of what it was like.

A Beautiful Dark was an intense, mysterious read with interesting and diverse protagonists.  Love triangles?  Well of course!  but this one was a little different, with a conclusion that blew my socks off.  Devin and Asher were so different that it was hard to decide which team to go for, and the ending - well you'll just have to read it to find out.

Skye, the main protagonist is a complicated character and I kept getting frustrated for her.  No-one ever seemed to tell her anything.  She's confused, conflicted and frustrated and my heart went out to her.  There is also a wonderful secondary story with two of the minor characters, Cassie and Don, that was just lovely. It wasn't essential to the story, but helped to flesh out the other characters and was  so sweet.

If you don't like cliffhanger endings you are definitely not going to like this one.  Did I mention that crazy ending?  A Beautiful Dark is a quick, engrossing read that will grab you and just won't let you go.  A definite must read for paranormal fans.
