One last thing...(yes, I know it seems like I go on and on and on).  I am from Calgary and last week most of Southern Alberta experienced extreme flooding.  Many people have lost their homes and many pets are displaced.  I was fortunate not to have any flood-related problems (except for work) and my family is safe.  Calgary is the town I grew up in. Although I just recently moved back, it is a place I have always called home and although so many are pitching in to assist, it saddens me to see that so much more is needed  

 Please consider making a $5 donation to the Canadian Red Cross   If you are a Rogers user, you can contribute $5 by texting ABHELP to 4664.  For other mobile companies, you can text REDCROSS to 30333.  The Calgary Stampede will go on this year as planned starting next Friday (July 5th).  To raise money, the Calgary Stampede is offering up tees that say "Come Hell or High Water", a slogan recently popularized from our current situation.  You might want to check them out as well - Calgary Stampede tees. “What is your favorite Halloween costume?
Even if you don’t celebrate, what kinds of costumes do you like?”

OK, I have to be honest here...I'm not a big fan of Halloween.  I've never been big on getting dressed up but I do like this holiday for little kids.  This will be my daughter's first Halloween to go trick or treating.  Last year she was scared of all the kids in the costumes coming to the door.  Just because I don't like to get dressed up, doesn't mean I can't appreciate others' costumes though.  I love the "original" costumes.  I once saw someone go as static cling and safety pin a bunch of socks, underwear and fabric softener sheets to a plain t-shirt. Hilarious!

Added by Curlypow - Christinabean is such a party pooper for halloween :)  I used to love dressing up as a witch and I would sit on my front step reading by flashlight. (My hubby took the three kids out.) The porch was all covered in spider webs, with rats and spiders all around and lots of crunchy leaves underfoot and streamers hanging from the roof.  When the kids would walk up to the door, I would swing my flashlight up and scare them half to death.  It was sooooo much fun.  My daughter's best costume was when she and her girlfriend spent all afternoon blowing up purple and green balloons and safety pinned them to sweatshirts - they went as bunches of grapes.  The costumes were so wide, they couldn't get out of the front door.  It was hilarious. Happy Halloween.

What's your favourite candy?

That's a toughie...I used to LOVE sponge toffee.  There was a little candy store in Banff, Alberta where we would get it.  You could buy it all chunky and I'd break off hunks and eat it all the way home.  But I also love salt water taffy.  Once I start, I can't seem to stop eating the stuff.  It's hell on your fillings though...but then there's Jr. Mints.  I like those too.  So I think the answer to this question is that I like just about any kind of candy.  It's important not to discriminate, don't you think?

“What is your favorite spooky book (i.e. mystery/suspense, thriller, ghost story, etc.)?”

This on a toughie...I love mystery/suspense, thrillers and ghost stories.  To be honest, I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to scary stories and movies.  I can't watch in theatres.  I HAVE to watch on television or on DVD so that I can mute the screen if I freak out.  Likewise with a book, I find myself taking quick breaks as things get scary so that I can get a grip.  Silly huh?

(BTW, I really enjoyed The Devouring by Simon Holt...if you're looking for a good dose of creepy and scary...)

What a wonderful question and what a difficult one to answer.  I had a look at the 2010/11 list and there were several titles on it that made my 'list'  At first I thought I'd go with The Hunger Games, and then I changed my mind.  I think my favourite is actually 'Twenty Boy Summer' by Sarah Ockler.  It was challenged as being soft porn, but I remember reading it and thinking it was a wonderfully poignant read about how different people handle the loss of a loved one.  I guess it's all in how you interpret what you read, but the important thing is that EVERYONE should be given the opportunity to make that interpretation, not have it made for them.

“As a blog reader, what information (besides the book review) do you like to see in other bloggers’ reviews of books? (For example – Author bio, social media links, book synopsis from Amazon/Goodreads or one written by the blogger, page count, ISBN number, link to purchase, etc.)”

I personally like to see book trailers (and I sometimes forget to put them up) of upcoming books.  I'm a bit of a visual person so I like to see what the book is all about without the written word sometimes.  Also, I do like to see if the author has written previous titles and if there are any read-alikes.

As a book blogger, how do you introduce yourself in your profile?

Personally, I think that in creating our blog, we wanted to have a purpose for doing what we do.  Sure, we love to read books but we also wanted to make sure that we had some direction.  We introduced ourselves as two librarians who want to share our love for mostly YA titles.  We do add a few other things here and there such as crafting titles but generally we try to stick to one area.  I know we have a loyal following of other like-minded individuals in the industry as well as readers looking for their next great read.

This week’s question – “Many of us primarily read one genre of books, with others sprinkled in. If authors stopped writing that genre, what genre would you start reading? Or would you give up reading completely if you couldn’t read that genre anymore?”



If I'm honest, my favourite genre is fantasy, but I seriously doubt that anyone looking at my book shelves would be immediately aware of that.  I read just about everything that's fiction, with a sprinkling of non-fiction and biographies in there occasionally.  Usually what I read depends on my mood - I bought City of Fallen Angels the day after it hit the stores and I still haven't read it yet, because it hasn't 'spoken' to me.  So really I read anything and everything.  To me the idea of not reading would be akin to losing an arm or a leg. There is always something out there to read, and changing my mind about what I want to read and when is half the fun. The only way I'll ever stop reading is if I lose my sight - god forbid - and then I'd just go to audio books  :)

What are you most looking forward to this fall/autumn season – A particular book release? Halloween? The leaves changing color? Cooler temperatures? A vacation? 

I always find spring and fall to be brutal months for me because I have seasonal allergies.  I have to admit that I do love the pretty colors in the fall.  The way the leaves turn yellow, orange and red always makes me feel a bit nostalgic about the summer.  I am really looking forward to this upcoming Halloween because it will be the first time my 3 year old will go out trick-or-treating.  I can't wait to see the look on her face as strangers dump candy into her bag and Mommy says its OK (just for today....)

Yes I do.  I have little cat called Lucy.  She's a bit lonely right now since we lost her big sister a short while ago.  I also get visited by my Grand-doggies at least once a week.  They are a doberman and a german short-haired pointer/alaskan huskie mix.  That's Dante and Lexie respectively.  I love them, because they come to visit, and then they leave - best of both worlds.

Hmm....this is a toughie for me. I think that a lot of the titles in my collection have much to do with the pictures on the cover (yes, once again, such a cover snob).  They mean so much more when you see the title with the picture for meaning -

Absolutely no question in my mind, that would be Beautiful Chaos by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  Beautiful Creatures was my favourite book that year and I managed to get an arc for Beautiful Darkness which was even better.  To get an arc for #3 would be absolutely awesome.  I just love this series - southern gothic with bells on. Please, please, please ..... :)

For me, that would have to be 'Supernaturally' by Kiersten White.  This is the follow-up novel to 'Paranormalcy'  I follow Kiersten's blog and she has to be one of the funniest writers around.  She has me in hoots most of the time with her self-deprecating humour.  I'd love to meet her one day.  If Supernaturally is even half as much fun as Paranormalcy, it will be well worth the purchase price.

Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.


But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

I find that science fiction and fantasy are the hardest genres for me to get into.  Fantasy has always been hard for me to get into (maybe I just don't have a good imagination?) until recently.  I'm finding more fantasy that I can identify with.  Science Fiction is a genre that I just can't seem to wrap my head around . I know that Curlypow is a big fan but not so much for me....

How/Where do you get your books?  Do you buy them or go to the library?  Is there a certain website that you use like Paperbackswap?

We tend to borrow most of our books from the library since we both work at the library and see all of the new titles coming in.  However, we both give in sometimes and go on book buying binges.  Right now Curlypow is holding a ton of my TBR pile books that I just can't get to.  One of my favourite places to go is http://www.bookcloseouts.com/.  It is a Canadian company and shipping is reasonable.  The biggest thing for me is that there is NO CUSTOMS charges.  They have great deals on scratch and dent titles (sometimes 70 or 90% off) and also carry some autographed books.  Right now, all pocket books are 25% off.  Check it out and let me know when it becomes your new 'go to' bookstore....

This week’s question –  “What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?“


This seems as thoough it should be an easy question to answer, but after some thought, it's not easy at all.  Basically for me, (Curlypow) I need to make a connection with the book.  That connection doesn't neccessarily have to be with the characters tho'.  It could be with the writing style, the setting, the POV, the humour, the angst - I could go on and on.  If the connection hasn't been made by around pages 50 -75, I rarely carry on reading.  If I have been given a recommendation by someone whose choices I normally enjoy, I may persevere a little longer, but there are so many excellent books available now, that it seems foolish to continue reading something I'm not enjoying. How about you?
