Feature and Follow is a blog hop that was started by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Each week a different question is posted by our hosts and we will answer! This is a great opportunity for bloggers to network and interact. The most amazing thing is that this week The Paperback Princesses are one of the featured blogs. How cool is that? Check out our feature on Alison Can Read
This weeks feature and follow question is:
Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place?
Curlypow here: I am not a huge fan of contemporary fiction. I don't mind the odd contemp romance like Anna and the French Kiss or something similar, but angsty contemps are really not my thing. Until about a year or so ago when I picked up Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I don't remember now why I picked it up in the first place - I know I got it from the library, but the book just blew me away. It has such a strong message about bullying and shows so clearly how we compound problems by being passive and not speaking out. I firmly believe this should be required reading for high school. I still don't read many contemps though - I leave that to Christinabean - give me fantasy every time.
Christinabean here. I'm all about the paranormal/supernatural. It took a little coaxing but I finally reached out to try some fantasy a few years ago and loved it. My turnaround book was Graceling by Kristin Cashore. I was hooked. Curlypow recommended I try it out and I'm glad I did. The characters were insightful and the story was well-developed. I think I finished it in about 3 days. That's fast when you're juggling 2 jobs, a family and a blog! The next genre for me to tackle now is Science Fiction. Still not a huge fan but I'm a firm believer in trying new things.
Welcome to the Paperback Princesses! Make yourself at home, take a look around our blog and let us know what you think in the comments section. We would love to hear what you have to say about our posts. We often try to comment on your comments as well so feel free to start a conversation! Since there are two of us running the show, we always have a variety of titles and event postings. Be sure to check out our own personal meme page. Check out Fantastic Fairytales, Let's Hear it for the Boys, In Case you Missed it and a few others. We try to not only focus on new YA books but also great titles from the past.

Great answers! Contemporary fiction really isn't my thing either, actually I really don't like it. I'll have to look into the books you mentioned, maybe that will change my mind.
ReplyDeleteGraceling was just okay for me. I don't know. Maybe I just didn't enjoy it that much. But I know it's really popular.
Congrats on being featured! I haven't read either of those, sadly...but I really want to! I even own both of them >.<

Oh nice answers! I think for me it depends on the fantasy books... the contempory fiction aren't a problem I think, but the same it depends.

Great answer, I agree about contemporary fiction and have been wanting to pick up Thirteen Reasons Why, but everytime I read the summary, I cringe a little, afraid I will hate it.

I usually am not a big fantasy reader. It's getting a little bit better finding some of the books that I actually like. I really like contemporary fiction, but it's hard for me to find books in the genre that I want to read.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being a feature.

Congrats on the feature. I am a new follower! ;)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the feature!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Graceling, although it's not my FAVORITE fantasy, I can see how it would convert you! And I hope you enjoy your foray into sci-fi.
And I'm with you on the avoiding contemporary thing, although I read Fault in Our Stars by John Green yesterday, and it was fabulous. Totally wrecked me, but fabulous. Now I'm in the mood for some more contemporary after that!
