Follow Friday - November 9

Friday Follow is a blog hop that was started by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.  Each week a different question is posted by our hosts and we wil answer!  This is a great opportunity for bloggers to network and interact.
This week’s question – Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

I have no problem at all with books having similar ideas, but I do have a problem with books having similar details.  Thankfully, that is rarely the case, so I don't have to worry about it very often.  The only time I don't mind it is if the story is actually billed as a retelling - say of Austen or Shakespeare etc.  In that instance I usually start looking for the similarities - and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. On of my favourite retellings lately was Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce - loved that book.  One of these days I'll get around to reading Sweetly.  Christinabean read it and said it was worth trying.

You really should try Sweetly Miss Curlypow.  I still think you'd enjoy it!  I do enjoy reading books with similar ideas or retellings.  This year I have found myself reading many books about Persephone and Hades.  As an author, I imagine the most difficult part about delving into a book that has an already established fanbase is differentiating yourself enough to be memorable.

  2. I like the way you put that -- similar ideas, but not similar details. Very good. My FF

  3. Great answer! I really can't get enough of retellings, but when the details are exactly the same, I will put it down immediately. A little originality can't hurt. New follower! :)

  4. Good point! When a story is purposefully mirroring a classic, it's fun to find similar details expressed :D

  5. Agree with your comment of having similar ideas (as I feel none are truly original)!
