Follow Friday

Friday Follow is a blog hop that was started by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.  Each week a different question is posted by our hosts and we will answer!  This is a great opportunity for bloggers to network and interact.
This week’s question –

How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

I give a book 20-50 pages usually before tossing it over.  Sometimes, if it was a highly recommended read, I might try it another time when I am more in the mood for that particular genre.  I used to power through books that I did not enjoy until one day someone said to me - There are too many books out there for you to be wasting your time on something that you hate.  Besides, it's not like the book police are going to arrest me or give me a fine for not finishing...uh, are they?

I realised a little while ago that I was over 150 pages into a book and that I was totally unimpressed by it.  After another 30 or so pages, I gave up.  There was just no point.  As much as we want to give authors - especially new authors - a chance, I have come to accept that I have just too much else going on to struggle through something I'm not enjoying.  I don't do it with movies, why would I do it with books.  With this attitude, I now know that New Adult is not my genre, or even contemporary adult romance.  Sometimes we read books through and realise at the end that we didn't enjoy it, and then give it a honest, if not positive review, but if we're struggling to finish - it's just not worth it. Beware though - I did hear the book police were seen leaving Toronto last week!

  1. I agree. Life is too short. I work in a library, so it's hard to read a book I'm hating, when all those books are staring at me....

  2. I always follow through on books in case I'm missing out on something. I'm starting to feel as if I should stop reading books as soon as I don't like them though. I'm a bloglovin follower.

  3. Makes sense, there's no shortage of books and no need to be miserable if you don't like the one you're reading. I'll DNF if I have to rather than slog through one i don't like.
